8 Good Reasons to Do Drama at School
- It helps students to learn &
experience:
• self-confidence
• being able to speak well in public
• being able to role play (being able to imagine how someone
else would do things or how you would do things in any given
situation)
• being able to communicate with a large variety of people
• being able to understand the customs and people of other
cultures
• being able to work as a member of a team
- It helps students to develop
their personal skills for life.
They learn how to:
• become more independent
• become more responsible
• become a leader
• become a better communicator
• make better decisions
• solve disagreements more effectively
• reach their full potential
• become better at making plans and carrying them out
- It allows students to be
themselves
They are able to bring their own life into the class. They are
given opportunities to discuss and show the things that they
think are important in your life.
- It helps students think better
Recent studies have found that good thinkers are people who
think with both the right and left sides of their brain. In any
typical Drama class students will use both sides of their brain
at some stages during the lesson. Drama helps them to improve
both creative and analytical skills. Scientists now believe it
is important that everyone gets more opportunities each day to
use both the right and left sides of the brain on tasks such as
those we do in Drama.
- It helps students to develop
their co-ordination skills
Through taking part in the variety of games, warm-up activities
and physical movements used in Drama students are improving
their physical co-ordination without even realising it.
- It helps students to appreciate
the artistic work of others
The skills they learn in Drama help them to better understand
and appreciate those of actors, directors, musicians, and
technicians in film, radio, television and theatre. The
entertainment industry is one of the oldest employers of talent
in the world. In Drama they learn how theatre in the past has
influenced the entertainment industry of today.
-
It allows students to develop their
strengths
Drama encourages them to show their ideas in a large variety of
ways including: acting, drawing, sketching, writing, talking,
discussing, debating, public speaking and communicating. There
are very few other subjects at school that give them such a
choice
-
It allows students to have fun and learn at the same time
Drama is essentially an enjoyable
subject. It often takes place in a classroom that is set up
differently to any other in the school. The Drama classroom has its
own set of rules they can have a very enjoyable time and learn new
skills in a safe and supportive environment.
